Dog Day Recipes

Here are some recipes from Judy and from Matt & Denise, to help you while away this awful heat, hunidity, and smog…..

1. Judy’s Blackberry Beef
Take a pound of beef (steak or stew) and cut into thin strips or chunks.
In a bowl, mix 1 tbs sesame oil, ¼ cup of blackberry zing, 2 tsp chili powder, salt, and mix thoroughly. Add raw beef and stir to coat. Let marinate for ½ hour.

Cut up 1-2 cloves of garlic and put in a skillet with 2 tbs sesame oil. Saute over low heat for several minutes. Add 1-2 tbs sesame seeds and stir into the oil and garlic. Add the beef and marinade fluid. Simmer until beef is cooked, 15 minutes or so.

2. Judy’s Zing on the Rocks

Fill a glass with ice cubes and add ¼-1/2 cup of blackberry zing. Let ice melt for several minutes then drink. Zing also works in hot or cold tea, on granola, in hard cider or dry white wine, too. Does it work with brandy? Hmm, we’ll have to test it….

3. Okra in Yoghurt
(From BVO CSA members Matt and Denise Finney’s “Primer for Introducing Yankees to Okra”)

Rinse ½ # okra,
Add 1 chopped onion.
2 chili peppers
¼ C. vinegar
Cook in a frying pan over medium heat
Add water if needed

While the okra is cooking, make the yoghurt sauce
Mix together 1 C. plain Yoghurt
½ tsp ground coriander
¼ tsp ground cumin
1/8 tsp ground chili pepper

Pour sauce over Okra, stir in at low heat
Add cloves and cinnamon to taste

Thank You

Thom and Judy
